Becoming an Engineer in 2011

Engineering, especially the mechanical side of things, is really taking off in 2011 in terms of job prospects. There are just so many different occupational areas a mechanical engineer can actually find work in, that it is considered the most versatile of all the engineering disciplines.  I've been reading up on so many news sites and looking at the statistical figures for both employment as well as salary figures, and things look incredibly promising.
